10 Ways Recruiters Can Make the Most of the Slow Period at Christmas

Door 9 of our #TRN Advent Calendar. We talk you through 10 ways you can remain proactive during this potential slow period, which will ensure you kickstart January in the right way. Most companies will close early for Christmas or will delay decisions until after New Year, so to avoid a long period of downtime it is vital to have candidates and vacancies in the pipeline ready to close in January. We talk you through 10 ways you can remain proactive during this potential slow period, which will ensure you kickstart January in the right way.

1. Visit Clients

Get out of the office and drop in to visit your clients. Not just your best clients, but also those clients that you would like to get on their PSL. Build relationships with them, ask for feedback from them and use the information that you gain to make improvements. Objectives and expectations can also be set, which will help you get organised for the year ahead.

2. Keep in touch with unplaced candidates

Touch base with the candidates who have not been placed yet. It is hard to find talent and you do not want them to lose interest and disappear on you in the New Year.

3. Keep in touch with placed candidates

Equally it’s important to keep in touch with placed candidates during the festive season too. Even something as small as wishing them a merry Christmas or sending a card can strengthen the relationship with them, meaning they are likely to come back to you if they are looking for a new job in the future.

4. Get ahead of the competition

Don’t take your eye off the ball in December. While many of your competitors slow down for Christmas, this may be your chance to pick up some of their business. And if your competitors don’t slow down for Christmas, you don’t want to fall behind them.

5. Training and Self-Development

Invest your time wisely and book yourself on a training day or course. Use the time you have now in the quieter periods to develop your own skills to better lead your team, or achieve more in the upcoming year. It’ll pay off when you’re busy. We offer Sales, CX and Leadership masterclasses, with regular dates throughout the year.

6. Work on your employer brand

Use the time you have now to work on your employer brand. There are many things you could do to help promote this. Maybe a charitable donation or event to raise money during the festive period would go well towards your brand image, and help someone who is in need too. Win-win! Or maybe use the time to write some blog articles for your website to keep a bank of for the new year, to post during your busier periods.

7. Automation

Are you closing or having time off between Christmas and New Year? Then prepare for this and make sure you have your out of office ready for your emails and that your phones are covered with a voicemail message. This means that anyone who tries to contact you will be kept informed, and know that you are not ignoring your messages.

8. Optimising your processes

Are there any processes that you can make slicker, or anything you can make more efficient? Use this time to make your business processes more efficient and stream lined. Maybe there is time consuming admin work that needs doing, that you can simplify, which you’ll be thankful for later in the year.

9. Read our #TRN Advent Calendar blog articles

Throughout December we are releasing a new blog article every day. Our #TRN Advent Calendar articles are a mix of light-hearted content with insights on where the recruitment industry will be heading in 2018 to help you stay ahead of the curve and reflection on 2017.

10. Plan for the year ahead in 2018

Plan out your year ahead. Use this time now to review your performance over 2017, what did you do well, what did you not do so well? Analyse your activities and your progress, so that you can set yourself achievable and measurable goals for 2018.
